CAMPBELL RIVER SALMON FESTIVAL

Presents

 NORTH ISLAND

 LOGGER SPORTS

2008

August 8 to 10,  at Nunns Creek Park

The North Island Logger Sports Show

Is the place the loggers go

With sharpened saws to cut the block

Or climb the spar to reach the top

And some will try their birling skill

and get wet if they take a spill

Others will try the springboard chop

To be the best by the timers clock

Or be the one to take first place

In the axe throw or choker race

Lets mark the date so we're not late

For Logger Sports two thousand and eight

Historically, logging has been the prime resource based industry for the coastal

areas of British Columbia.  From the days of hand logging, bulls, horses and steam machinery, to today’s use of grapple yarders, self loaders and helicopters, the

industry has seen many changes.  Throughout these changes, the one thing that

has remained constant, is the loggers getting together to show off their skills in

friendly competitions.

Today, nearly every major logging community has these competitions,

which have become known as “Loggers Sports“ and Campbell River is no exception.  Since Campbell River is the major center for the logging industry

on Northern Vancouver Island and the many coastal islands and inlets, it is

only natural that Logging Sports Competitions became a major event in the community.

Logging Sports are not just competitions amongst loggers, but they provide the opportunity to depict the heritage of the North Island by incorporating entertaining events that show both past and present logging practices.  Events like axe throwing, tree climbing, spring board chops, log rolling, hand bucking and high speed power saw cutting never cease to amaze the crowds at these competitions

In fact, Logging Sports has become so popular, that TSN and OLN Television networks have a STIHL Lumberjack Competition Series that airs in US & Canada.  The “North Island Logger Sports” was filmed

for those networks in 2000, 2006 & 2007 and last years show will be aired on TSN through 2008.   Also

“A Channel”, “CH” and “CTV” covered the North Island Logger Sports the last few years for their news broadcasts.

For 2008, “North Island Logging Sports” will feature 1 World Championship and 7 Canadian Championships, 15 Canadian East / West Logging Sports Competitions along with 17 other Masters, Open, Intermediate, Novice, ladies Youth and Teen events.  International and local loggers will be competing for part of the $40,200.00 prize package of this World Class Loggers Sports Competition.  This show is the largest Logging Sports Competition in Canada and is definitely one event you don’t want to miss, whether you are a competitor or spectator
